Scouting continues to provide the much-needed character development programs that are so important to our communities. Your support of the Council through the Friends of Scouting program helps ensure quality programs and positively impacts the lives of over 5,200 youth. We have seen countless hours of community service in which Scouts have shown the true meaning of helping others at all times. Over 130 young men will earn the Eagle Scout Award this year, and the credit for this accomplishment goes not only to the youth and their parents, but also to the leaders who have dedicated their service to our movement. These are just some of the many reasons Friends of Scouting presentations are so important to our youth and our communities. We have known for years that there are individuals, businesses, corporations, and trusts that desire to create and maintain a connection with the council through the giving of financial resources to Scouting.
The unrestricted financial gifts are given with the understanding that the council will use these dollars as needed to ensure the continuation of a quality Scouting program for the youth of our area. The Scoutreach program has positively impacted youth in the urban core of Kansas City, youth with special needs and youth from families with limited financial resources. A critical part of the new strategic plan is to increase the number of trained leaders and to add a program staff position to focus on supporting the training component of district operations. While the cost for this insurance is substantial, the leadership of the Heart of America Council believes that it is critical that volunteers, leaders and Scouts are able to enjoy the Scouting program while being covered by insurance. This ensures that the Scouting program will remain strong for your family. The Family Friends of Scouting program is an opportunity for families who directly benefit from the Scouting program to provide financial support. Family Friends of Scouting presentations take place during pack and troop meetings or you may be contacted by a volunteer from your pack or troop to consider a gift. Each year, the Family Friends of Scouting Fund raising Campaign (FOS) asks your support.
As unit leaders, your active commitment to this effort is a key component to the success of the campaign. As we know, the FOS provides a critical source of revenue to fund operating expenses that provide direct service to units in the Juniata Valley Council. This coming year, it is anticipated that FOS support will comprise almost 8.4 percent of the operating budget. As a reminder, or even if you are reading this for the first time, it's important to recall that the revenue from this campaign provides a wide range of services, for example: FRIENDS OF SCOUTING GIFTS ENSURES: Support for Seven Mountains Scout Camp so that camping fees are kept low Full-time professional support of all Scouting Units - Cub Scout Packs, Scouts BSA Troops, Explorer Posts, and Venture Crews District and council-wide activities Operation of the Juniata Valley Council Service Center where volunteer leaders can obtain literature, insignia, advancement badges, and other items vital to their program, A full service Scout shop where Scouters of all ages can obtain a full range of Scout supplies, many of which are kept readily available in stock, Training for volunteer leaders And many other resources to help keep Scouting strong where it counts, at the local unit level. A national outcomes study commissioned by the Boy Scouts of America and conducted by the nationally recognized research firm, Harris Interactive confirm what many of us have believed for years, that Scouting is important. And while that is not surprising, what is surprising is just how important Scouting's program is on the development of boys and young men and its lasting impact over their entire lifetimes. We hope you will consider value of Scouting and become part of this year's Friends of Scouting Campaign by making your commitment at a Pack, Troop, or Crew presentation or by sending your contribution to the Juniata Valley Council, BSA. Secure on line contributions may also be made by clicking here.
Unit leaders can assist us by working with your unit committee and plan activities for the months of January through April, selecting a night where a local Friends of Scouting volunteer can make a short presentation about the campaign to the parents and guests in attendance. This will be a brief (about 10 minutes) but important introduction to the Family FOS and is not intended to interfere with your regular program. Thank you in advance for your active commitment to the Friends of Scouting Campaign. If you have any questions or comments about the campaign, please contact your District Executive or your district fund raising chair. Once again, we look forward to your support and our collective effort towards making our council stronger for our youth. If you have a question, comment or suggestions, please E-mail: Jim Kennedy. With your support, Scouting will continue to: Offer young people responsible fun adventure. Train young people in citizenship, service, and leadership. Serve America's communities and families with its quality, values-based program. This does not mean that Scouts are the smartest, fastest, wealthiest or most popular; however it does mean that each one of them will lead a life that will make the world around them better for their families, friends, colleagues and society at large because they are open to growth. It is just as easy to support the program needs of a young person who lives five miles from the beach but has never been kayaking, or has never spent an entire day outside or never feels the pride during the applause of an entire elementary school upon the dedication of new bookshelves for the school library. These success stories occur every day in Scouting. Each year parents, volunteers, Scouting alumni, friends and business patrons donate time, energy and financial resources to this much needed yearly campaign.
Annual Giving provides the budgetary support for numerous improvements to our properties, expansion of Scouting programs into new markets and increases the chance that every young person in our community will benefit from the impact of Scouting. Each Unit conducting and hitting their GOAL earns an incentive from the Council. This information and description is explained in detail further down on this page under the heading UNIT INCENTIVES. Your unit can avoid having to fill out FFOS brochures by using this technology. While many have some dated references, please over look that to see what story and message can be used. Yearly registration fees directly support the National Council of the Boy Scouts of America and help provide program development and research, literature and other resources. The Friends of Scouting Campaign gives individuals and businesses the opportunity to contribute to the Cradle of Liberty Council at a level of their own choosing according to their interest and ability to give. Please select a meeting well-attended by families in your unit, preferably in the months of January, February, March, or April. Please publicize the meeting so families know about the Friends of Scouting program. If you have questions, please contact your district Family Friends of Scouting chair or district professional.
